Who’s invited to the Black Exodus? Not everybody. As more Black Americans consider moving abroad, this conversation has to go beyond visas, cheaper living, and escaping the United States. Portugal gets romanticized a lot — especially on YouTube. And while there’s plenty we love about living here, Portugal is not paradise, and it definitely isn’t perfect. Why do some Black men hesitate to move abroad In this livestream, seven Black men share what made them seriously consider life outside the United States, what they worried about before making the move, what changed their minds, and what life abroad has actually been like. Married and Single. Some live abroad full-time. Some split their time between the U.S. and another country. Their situations are different, but together they show that there is no one way to build a life abroad. We’ll talk about the questions many Black men have before making a move: • What about my job and income? • What about family and friends? • What about racism? • What if I don’t know anyone there? • Do I have to move permanently? • What if my spouse is ready and I’m not? • Can a single Black man build a good life abroad? • What do you actually gain by leaving the U.S.? And for the women who keep asking us, “How do I get my husband on board?” — we’re asking the men directly what helped them become open to the idea, and what definitely would not have worked. This is not about telling every Black man to leave America. It’s about helping more men understand that living abroad is a real option — whether you are married, single, retired, still working, moving full-time, or just testing the waters. If you’ve ever thought: “Could I really do this?” This conversation is for you.
